A bank for the Un-carrier

T-Mobile set out to provide a new offering outside of their existing products: a digital bank, called T-Mobile MONEY. This Place was tasked with creating the UX and visual design for their new app. To start the project, I worked with our partners at T-Mobile to help them envision what the future of banking could be. In production, we partnered with a digital bank to modify their existing platform to meet T-Mobile’s experience and business requirements.

Building trust

Our target audience was Millennials, the under or un-banked (No bank account), and parents. The overall trend found during our research was a large mistrust of big banks. Using the conversational interface on the home page of the app, I worked with our stakeholders to develop a messaging strategy that focused on balancing user needs with T-Mobile’s business goals. We focused on creating transparency in the state of the user’s money, while onboarding them to the benefits of the bank.

Direct deposit set up

To encourage users to keep T-Mobile MONEY as their primary banking relationship, I designed a tool that would help users switch their direct deposits without having to contact their employers or depositors. One of our primary target audiences, the under or un-banked tend to have many income sources, so the less time they have to spend setting up direct deposits as they switch, the better.

Transfers & payments

One of my main focuses was developing the interaction design for Person to Person (P2P) Payments, Bill Pay, and Inter-account transfers. I chose a wizard-style format to emulate more modern payments apps like the Cash App. The system I designed was extensible across all transfer types and would work with a future Zelle integration.

The wizard paradigm tested well against a more traditional single page format. While this design was not part of the launched MVP product, it will be considered for the future roadmap as our developer partner builds out their platform.
